The Default
Your competitive edge is the business you build—the model, the sales process, the how-to.
A Different Perspective
Your competitive edge is the unique combination you return to year after year; the business is only the vehicle.
Why It Matters
As AI makes similar businesses easier to stand up, sameness rises—and only a clear combo keeps you hard to replace in a narrow segment.
In this essay
What a unique combo is—and why the intersection compounds
How AI makes similar businesses easier for everyone to pursue
Copyable layers (business model, process) vs the uncopyable combo
Direction and execution as two different jobs—not one shortcut
When clarity is already tested, and execution can lead
Anyone can copy a business model. AI makes that cheaper every month.
What they cannot copy is your unique combo—the handful of things you naturally return to, year after year.
That is the thesis. The rest of this essay is how that moat works—and why the offer was never the moat.
A conversation made it concrete for me. Someone exploring an independent path already sensed the business she wanted. She wanted straight business advice—without diving into her values, who she is, or her own unique combo.
"I know what I want. Can we skip to the business part?"
That ask is common. Demands differ—some people need execution, some need clarity, some need both in a different order.
What does not change: advice without direction can optimize a life you will not stay in.
I believe the only durable way to lead a successful work life is to understand what can become your life's work.
Without knowing your values—without discovering what you actually return to when nobody is watching—you can still launch something.
You just may not stay.
Two layers people mash together
Business advisory is real work: positioning, offer, pricing, who to talk to first, how to deliver.
Direction is different work: values, strengths, lived experience, preferred way of working, and the people you feel called to help.
Diagram · Two sequences
Advisory first
Ship the offer. Optimize the funnel. Hope the work still fits when the novelty wears off.
Direction, then advisory
Name the combo. Choose a problem that fits. Then build the offer people can pay for.
Same tools. Different starting point. Only one sequence protects you from a business you abandon.
When someone says they already know what they want, I listen carefully.
Sometimes they do. Sometimes “I know” means “I am tired of searching” or “I do not want to look at who I am again.”
Those are different situations. They deserve different responses—not the same shortcut.
What a unique combo actually is
Your unique combo is not a slogan. It is the small set of things you naturally come back to—month after month, year after year.
Often it is about five strands woven together:
Diagram · Unique combo strands
01Values — what you will not trade away
02Strengths — what comes unusually easy to you
03Lived experience — the story only you could tell
04Way of working — how you actually like to spend days
05Who you help — the people you feel called toward
Any one strand is common. The intersection is rare. That intersection is the segment where you become hard to beat.
Once you know that combo, you become oddly unstoppable in a narrow place.
Not because the market is empty. Because nobody else is standing at that exact intersection with your history in their body.
Anyone tomorrow can copy your business. Once you have your unique combo, you are unbeatable in that specific segment.
Why AI makes this more true, not less
Here is the thesis I keep returning to.
AI will help more people pursue similar businesses. Landing pages, research, delivery systems, even “positioning drafts” get cheaper. Ready-made how-tos spread faster. The surface of entrepreneurship flattens.
That sounds scary if your moat was the process.
It is clarifying if your moat was never the process.
Diagram · What AI can paste vs what it cannot
Distribution still matters. Capability still matters. But the person who owns a clear combo can rebuild the copyable layer when the market shifts.
When everyone can stand up a similar offer, sameness becomes the default.
The people who win are not the ones with the cleverest first landing page. They are the ones whose work is rooted in something they will still care about when the first version fails—and whose combination of care, skill, and story is hard to fake.
That is also why I keep saying: discover the combo before you hire someone to optimize the business.
Otherwise you are polishing a vehicle pointed at a destination you have not chosen.
When “I already know” is true
I do not want discovery to become a tax on people who already have clarity.
If someone can name their combo, and it has been stable across years—not a mood from last Tuesday—then advisory can sit on top of that. Direction is done. Execution is the work.
The line I hold is narrower:
We do not skip values work when direction is fuzzy or untested.
Interactive · Which “I know what I want” is this?
Fuzzy knowing
“I know” means a vague industry, a borrowed idea, or relief at ending the search.
Move: surface the combo before you scale advice. Advisory too early hardens the wrong path.
Tested combo
The same five strands keep showing up across years. Others already ask for this help.
Move: advisory and building can lead. Discovery becomes a short check, not a multi-week detour.
Skip the inner work
The ask is straight business advice—without values, identity, or unique combo. The business idea feels clear; the person underneath is off-limits.
Move: separate execution help from direction work. If the combo is untested, name that gap before optimizing the offer.
Holding the line is not gatekeeping. It is refusing to sell speed when the bottleneck is identity.
What the combo protects
Not a program sequence. The chance that a work life still fits in three years—not just looks viable in a pitch this month.
Businesses get copied. Trends get templated. AI will make “start something similar” easier for everyone in the room.
Your unique combo does not get pasted into someone else's ChatGPT window.
That is the part worth finding first.
Then—when the combo is clear or already tested—bring in the advisors, the funnels, the pricing debates, the launch plans.
At that point, advice compounds. Before that point, advice can just accelerate the wrong bet.
Questions worth answering
What is a unique combo?
The small set of things—often about five—you naturally return to over years: values, strengths, lived experience, how you like to work, and who you feel called to help. The intersection is your segment.
Why not start with business advisory?
Advisory optimizes offer, price, and go-to-market. Without direction, you can ship a working business you will not stay in. Discovery first when direction is fuzzy; advisory first when the combo is already tested.
Does AI make every business the same?
It flattens the copyable layer—models, pages, workflows. Sameness rises. The durable difference is the person whose combo roots the work in something competitors cannot imitate on demand.

The moat is not the model
Anyone can copy a business model tomorrow.
AI makes that cheaper every month.
What they cannot copy is your unique combo.
The handful of things you return to, year after year.
Know that first—and you become hard to replace.
Skip it—and advice optimizes a life you may not want.
